As a Chief Engineer – mariner – I have to know how to deal with water because on a ship we make it from sea water and of course that means ensuring that it’s safe to drink and clean with. Most marine engineers are very aware of the diseases that can come with poor quality water and that’s why as soon as I bought a spa I bought the means to keep it sterile.
Now, I also know that the chemicals enclosed are for domestic use and as such don’t represent huge value for money given that I’m more used to buying this sort of stuff by the metric tonne…
However, what this package of chemicals does do is make it easy to check and treat your water because it’s essential to keep on top of it or you risk catching something nasty, very quickly.
The instructions are clear and easy to follow and also enclosed is a set of dip sticks to check PH and chlorine levels.
One thing to understand is that adding chlorine is not a one stop thing. Chlorine (despite the various Facebook posts) is not long lasting and very quickly it dissipates. If you have correctly dosed water one day, 24 hours later most of the free chlorine if not all will be gone thus leaving the water free to become contaminated. This is particularly problematic with spas because the water volume is low relative to the amount of people using it.
Once stabilised I found that using this kit 5mg of the stabilised chlorine granules dosed once a day was enough to maintain my cheap inflatable spa in the correct zone for safe water. This is a slightly higher level than a pool for the reasons I’ve already noted.
Only once did I have to use the PH reducer because I was a bit enthusiastic putting in the chlorine when I first set up my spa.
Overall, an essential item for health and safety if you have a spa or pool.
